The Viral Garden's Top 25 Marketing blogs

I added this nifty Firefox extension that gives a blog's Alexa ranking and Google PageRank when you visit, and I thought it would be fun to do a Top 20 ranking of the marketing blogs, a la the AP Top 25. The rankings are according to Alexa, and basically if I think your blog either focuses mainly on marketing, or marketing is at least half the content, then I added you(and the content couldn't be all news-related, like Marketing Vox). Certain judgment calls had to be made, like including Creating Passionate Users and What's Next, and not including Micro Persuasion and AdRants.

So according to Alexa, here's the top marketing blogs, at least all the top ones I could find ;) Each blog's Alexa ranking follows their position:

1 - Seth's Blog - 11018
2 - Guy Kawasaki - 14793
3 - Gaping Void - 18059
4 - Duct Tape Marketing - 18562
5 - Creating Passionate Users - 22087
6 - Marketing Shift - 53816
7 - HorsePigCow - 53986
8 - Brand Autopsy - 85385
9 - Church of the Customer - 87685
10 - What's Next - 90302
11 - Coolzor - 108026
12 - Emergence Marketing - 118773
13 - Jaffe Juice - 126679
14 - Marketing Roadmaps - 137510
15 - Beyond Madison Avenue - 147519
16 - Diva Marketing - 153025
17 - Jack Yan - 163243
18 - Johnnie Moore's Weblog - 165287
19 - What's Your Brand Mantra - 183879
20 - Marketing Begins At Home - 259014
21 - Decker Marketing - 260171
22 - Being Reasonable - 268503
23 - The Origin of Brands - 282050
24 - Crossroads Dispatches - 294041
25 - The Brand Builder Blog - 430378

So there's the first Viral Garden Top 25 Marketing Blogs. From now on I'll be posting the new rankings every Monday. A good way to make sure I start off the week with a post ;)

Oh my goodness, I had no idea I was doing this well with my blog. Thank you for posting this and for going to the sites to get the Alexa rankings.

wow! pretty cool. thanks for taking the time to do this research. a toss of the pink diva boa to you!

Thanks guys. It's fun, and it gives you an idea of how well you are doing compared to the other guys.

I should have added that the stats for any blog ranked above 100,000 are considered 'unreliable', according to Alexa, and it seems that the closer to the Top 100,000 you get, the more accurate your traffic stats. At least that's what I've noticed with BMA so far.

Still, I think it's a bit closer to reality than simply counting Technorati links.

Mack,

Really nice job! Finally a valuable source to identify the key influencers in the Marketing space. As VP of Global Marketing Strategy for HP, I recently started my blog and hope to be soon in your list!!!

Not including Steve Rubel, bwahaaaaaa! Good list and thanks for including mshift - I'll have to keep an eye on your blog.

Eric thanks for the link to your blog, looks very interesting, and I'll be reading it from now on. The problem is, Alexa doesn't give a seperate traffic ranking for your blog, it apparently views your blog as being a page on HP.com, and doesn't rank it as a seperate page. If that makes sense ;)

Jason the snub to Steve wasn't intentional, I promise ;) I see his blog as primarily a PR blog, so that's why he wasn't included.

where does jaffe juice stack up on this rank?

For some reason, I don't seem to be categorized as an advertising-related blog (perhaps its the message of Life after the 30-second spot or perhaps its the traffic)

would love to find out...send me an e-mail to jaffe@getthejuice.com and let me know.

I guess I understand leaving out the ad specific blogs, like adrants, but micropersuasion? That doesn't seem to make much sense.

"I guess I understand leaving out the ad specific blogs, like adrants, but micropersuasion? That doesn't seem to make much sense."

Judgment call on my part. I see MP as primarily a PR blog, and what marketing content MP has, is mostly simply links to articles. All the other blogs on this list have actual marketing content/theory/opinion, not simply links to marketing news.

Not that Steve doesn't occasionally give his views on marketing, I just don't think he does it in proportion to what the other listed blogs do. And again, he does work for one of the more well-known PR firms.

The main criteria for being listed as a marketing blog is that your blog can't mainly be a link/news aggregator (I didn't list Marketing Vox either, for this same reason), and you have to spend a solid amount of time discussing marketing issues. I think all the blogs listed meet that criteria.

Some, such as Guy's, are borderline, and if they move away from discussing marketing topics for a period of time, I will probably drop them from this list. Others such as BMA, cover a more or less equal portion of marketing and advertising, so BMA will be on both lists. Also, Jaffe Juice does this as well, so JJ will be included in the next advertising list next Monday on BMA.

But as for where you rank, I'm simply using the Alexa traffic ranking, that's it.

Great to notice there's even a Belgian blog in this list (Coolzûr). And rightfully so: it's one of the blogs in my RSS feeds which hardly ever lets me down.

SK I saw your blog for the first time a couple of days ago. Very nice, I have a feeling it might be in the Top 25 very soon ;)

Still catching up from my trip to the "happiest celebration on earth" (r) so a belated thank you for including the Roadmap on your list.

Anonymous said...

Wow, that's interesting. Unless I misunderstand Alexa's stats, the traffic rank for MarketingHeadhunter.com is 274,606. Is that the number you are using? Great concept. Thanks for sharing.

Mack, just following up on what you wrote at Diva Marketing: thank you in advance for doing weekly updates to this list. I think it is a fine idea.

Harry, during the first 2-3 weeks, there will be plenty of shakeout as I find blogs that I missed the week before. I've already found a few that 'new' ones that will be added in today's Week 2 listing. And yes, your Alexa ranking is what I'm using to rank the Top 25 Marketing blogs.

Jack thanks again for the kind comments. I wanted to do this as a way to track how blogs were doing over time, and to discover some new marketing blogs I may have overlooked. I'm glad so many fellow bloggers seem to be enjoying it!

Please can we claim the no 25 position?

According to Alexa- we should be there...only just, but...

Hey, you meant Top 25 Marketing Blogs, in English, didn't you?

Our blog (in Spanish) should be in the middle of the list.

Lots of great blogs on this list, thank you! Perhaps you'll look at www.toprankblog.com which would weigh in at #6 on your list based on Alexa (29,167)

Cheers!

Looks like I could have made it as #25.

Alexa says I'm 318,691.

I'd be honored to have been included and hope to make it next time.

More importantly, thanks for the list as it will give me some great blogs to link to and read.

Excellent list. Thanks for pulling this together.

If you're going to continue to provide these on a regular basis, would it possible to persuade you to post the feed list as OPML? Please? Pretty please? Then, I err... I mean we, your faithful readers, could get all these (and any new entries) into our feed readers, lickety split.

My marketing blog (JamesBrausch.com) is listed as 124,668 on Alexa. That would make me #13.

Any chance of getting www.wildfiremarketinggroup.com/blog/ added to this list?

Even though the list is very good and thanks to you I've added few good blogs to my feed .... Alexa rank is very "unstable" and doesn't really do much. Sure if one site has a rank of 4 and another one is 1,644,543 ... I can bet $20 on the winner in terms of popularity, but other then that .... doesn't do much for me.

Good blog though. Thanks.

I´m agree with Fernando, my blog is 146.452 rank. Do you consider only english?

Great list!
I'm always looking for fresh marketing sources to link to.

As a non commercial blogger, I'm not too concerned about ranking and happily send my readers to better sources.
(The readers, for some reason, always come back anyway).

Not sure if either of my blogs qualify but I certainly do discuss marketing quite a lot in both -

and

Hi Mack,

I liked your top 25 post and I've commented on it in a post at http://acornservice.blogspot.com/2006/05/what-are-top-25-marketing-bloggs.html Where I also show that really your own blog should be at number 13a in your own list.

You must be hiding your light under a bushel.
